What to look for in a business laptop

Updated:

Laptops were basically made for business usage. You should have a pretty easy time finding one that will suit your needs, but you should be sure to look out for the following specifications so you don’t buy a machine that underperforms.

CPU cores

Cores help with parallel computing—things like using a web browser and word processor at the same time. For most business needs, four cores should be sufficient.

Memory (RAM)

RAM helps your computer perform tasks quickly by being able to quickly store and retrieve data. For business usage, we recommend 8 GB RAM (although 16 GB may feel extra slick!).

Storage

You should look for a laptop with around 250GB hard drive storage for your programs and files. This should also be based on your exact needs—if you need to store tons of video files on your device, then perhaps you need more storage.

Other factors / preferences

We can’t be too prescriptive on other factors like display size and weight: these are things you likely have personal preferences for. The only caution we have is that less than a 14 inch display size may feel a bit small and laptops over 5 pounds may feel a bit heavy.

Conclusion

Business needs are the sweet spot for most laptops. Still, we recommend not skimping too much when it comes to specs. If interested, here are some specific business laptops we recommend:
